Day 2 of solo Bohol bike tour. Recovery day. ≈10km with ≈200m elevation gain.
I knew from reviews that if I chose to stay at Sobral Rice Terraces View that I might be sucked into its gravitational orbit & tempted to extend my stay. After a tough Day 1 I chose to do so.
In the morning the hosts gave me a farm tour complete with unli fresh passion fruit & sugar cane while overlooking rice terraces, piggery, fish pond & geese.
Having a homebase was nice since I was able to strip my bike down & leave bags behind to make biking to Pahangog Twin Falls more relaxing. The ride back home from the falls especially was much nicer than the previous day's struggle fest.
Pahangog Falls were gorgeous with multiple spots to jump from and enjoy Bohol's consistently awe inspiring blue water. After an hour two others finally arrived to give my guide and I some company before a young local couple followed as well. One of the tourists had tattoos of Olympic rings & an Australia outline so I chatted him up a bit to ask him why, fanboy mode ready. Also named Kevin, in a surprisingly French(?) accent he told me he was a world champion trail runner in the 60km category. When I search my name & world champion online I can't find it though. Weird.
After the falls I went into the small town center nearby to try to get my phone bag stitched up for better rain protection. The woman who sewed it for me turned down all tokens of thanks, just like those who helped me the day before. On the way home the host boys chased after me as I biked by on their way home from school.
For sunset I rode my bike up the hill overlooking the homestay to enjoy a 360° view for sunset while largely failing at influencer duties.
The best surprise of the day was an invite to join my host family for dinner at the Dimiao Night Market as part of the annual town fiesta. The multicab ride down from the mountains was great ride recon for the next day & I got to bond a bit with the host kids. Live music, vendors, fair rides & games brought the sleepy coastal town to life as I was fed as much as I could cram into my stomach. The timing of my trip aligned perfectly to experience it. I want to go back, @taldeguzman

Day 1 of solo Bohol tour from September. The most brutal ≈50km of my life. ≈700m elevation gain largely in pitch darkness with broken front lights on impossibly muddy mountain roads.
Tagbilaran to Dimiao along the coast was pleasant so I thought I could make it in one shot without dinner. I made it... Barely.
I'm spoiled by a dynamo light on my city bike but I still should have checked my front lights before ride out. I fried both my front lights while charging and didn't realize it until it was too late. Along the coast I used a blue flashing rear light to supplement the decent street lights. The hills were too dark for that but one of my lights worked when plugged into my power bank.
Komyut led me to long stretches of unpaved roads under construction. They were as muddy as any trail I've ever ridden. That's what I get for booking a flight with no plan two days before leaving I guess.
On one steep, dark, muddy, climb I pushed greater than granny gear and my chain got caught between my cassette and wheel. I ended up removing my missing link to fix the chain, but in the absolute darkness it was tough to reconnect it. Fortunately, a few kind passersby - and I mean there were literally few people out there at all - stopped & used their motorcycles to light up the workspace.
I'm not the best mechanic in general, but when people are looming over my shoulder I'm even worse. In my fatigue & with a small crowd watching, I completely blanked on how to reconnect my missing link! It's embarrassing to look back on knowing how simple it is, but people trying to get a bit too hands on while assisting me freaked me out & I froze. Thankfully we finally figured it out & my new friends refused every token of thanks I offered other than bike shop stickers. They wouldn't even accept a small chocolate bar!
And woooww, I'm glad that they didn't! In the final kilometers of the ride I tried the climbing technique of biking side to side across the road in order to keep the incline as manageable as possible. However, I found myself veering side to side a bit more than I planned. I was bonking & bonking HARD! @dekadachocolates saved my life!

Rain season can cause drivers to have low visibility on the road. Wearing additional reflectorized gear can help (but not guarantee 🥲) being seen. Still, there’s nothing to lose by putting these on!
We always wish our fellow bike commuters safe travels so we’re giving away FREE reflectorized vests here at the shop. If you’re in the area and would like one, just drop by. Available until supplies last.
Thank you @pinaybikecommuter for donating these. Open na kami today!

If you’ve shopped on our website, you might’ve noticed one of our options for shipping is via Bike Messenger. Allow us to put a face to the name CHUBBY FXD!
This is Lyle. He’s taga-Pineda and is one of our suki tambays. He’s a full time student currently doing independent messenger work on the side.
If you’re not in a rush to receive your packages and are amenable to next day delivery, we hope you can consider booking him. He handles small items and can deliver within Metro Manila only, of course 😉
Chubby Fxd rates starts at P50, with an additional P10 per kilometer. You can get an estimate by pinning Tambay as the pick up point. Just note that Lyle may not always take the most direct route for safety.
All orders received after 7PM will be processed next shop day and shipped out the following day. Thanks for choosing the sustainable way!

Any day is a car-free day for our team that chooses the bicycle as their main mode of transport. But last Sunday, we all chose to celebrate World Car-Free Day a little differently and in our own little way.
@bikewrenchph took it off-road, @anekasc kept it within the metro with @solarcommuterclub, while @kevin.skincare biked to our pop-up at Manila Boat Club. Either way, all methods still celebrated car-free spaces, bringing together people with a shared love for open spaces and the bicycle.
You don’t have to use alternative modes of transport every single day, but if you could - freely and safely move in spaces that are conducive and convenient for you - would you?
